Go Canada Go!
We watched and celebrated with Canada during the Winter Olympic Games this past week. It was very neat to see parts of the opening ceremony, in all it’s grandiose performances. We learned about what the Olympics are and where they were being held this year, as well as the types of sports countries were competing in. We even made a graph of our favourite winter sports in the Olympics. We also learned about what the colours of the Olympic rings represented and made a Olympic coloured ring collage to show this. We also made our own torches.
We had the chance to see many different types flags that represent many countries around the world, played a flag matching games and chose our favourite looking flags to re-create. Everyone seemed surprised to learn that Calgary hosted the Olympics years ago. Some of them were really excited to know that they have even seen and been to places where the Calgary Olympics took place.
We competed in a few of our own games this week, including Hula Hoop Toss and Pom Pom Slam. For Hula Hoop Toss we had to toss the stuffy into a hula hoop, stand inside that hoop and do the action shown 3 times. For Pom Pom Slam we had to place the pom pom on the semi circle block, "slam" it, then measure to see how far it went. After the “games” were over we made own own fancy medals.
While the Olympics were on, it was a great chance to talk about being a good sport. We have been talking all week about what it means to be a good loser and good winner. They have been doing a great job congratulating each other the wins, not getting upset when they do not win and not bragging when they do win.
Elliot the elephant had his first week long visit with one of the kids! What a lucky elephant…he get stop do this 7 more times!
Our letters this week were I and U. These kids are turning into professional letter writers! They also made the letter U in many different ways; ie: cutting out, building with blocks/baby dolls, cup, etc.
Some other things we did this week included; journaling about their weekend, freeze dance and other exercise games, building a snow fort, and making a pretend bobsled store for kids “bobsledding” down the slide (harder pieces of surface snow).
