What a beautiful Fall it has been so far! We have been taking advantage of the last few days of warm weather we will probably have left by spending as much time outdoors as possible and observing/collecting leaves of all colours! We explored down in the ravine and adventured out to the Green Park to play and have a picnic.
This week we have been learning about pets; who has pets, the responsibilities of having a pet, and what makes a good pet. We pretended to be different types of pets through our movement song “I Have A Pet” by Simple Songs. We practiced/played how a vet cares for animals. A few books based around pets that we read this week are “I’ll Teach My Dog 100 Words” by Michael Frith and P.D. Eastman, “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish” by Dr. Seuss and “Bad Kitty” by Nick Bruel.
Our special leader days started up this past week, and it was cute to see pictures of the pets that the children have or want to have. Each day we asked the special leader to tell us all about their pet and what they do at home to care for them.
We continued with some of our All About Me activities from last week as well. They made the flower version of themselves. Then we measured a piece of yarn to their height, to make the stem.
This week we continued work on our Family Tree projects. They had the choice to tear or cut coloured paper into tiny pieces to glue within the outline of their forearm/hand. This next step is looking good! Stay tuned for the final products.
For our writing and letter practice this week we learned about the letters T and U. We practiced identifying the letter and whether it was at the beginning, inside or end of a word. We learned that U is a vowel and much like E, it likes to be in the middle of words more often than at the beginning. Our challenge for writing U was to make it look more like a glass than a bowl. We practiced forming U with our hands to give us a better idea of the letter formation we were trying to accomplish.
The kids have also been working really hard on our new way of practicing our names. “Spell it. Trace It. Build it. Write it.”
Some of the Nursery Rhyme songs we sang this week were Down by the Bay (a great opportunity to practice our rhyming skills. It was fun to hear what the group could come up with.) The More We Get Together, Humpty Dumpty, and Mary Had A Little Lamb.
Some other activities we did this week include building with marshmallows and toothpicks and making/painting with puffy paint (It was really neat to see how puffy the paint got after we microwaved their paintings.).
