This week was all about Ancient Egypt.
We learned about three types of pyramids in Ancient Egypt; True, Bent, and Step, and what pyramids were used for and what sorts of things were inside them (especially the treasures!). The kids had their own idea about what they wanted to make for a craft that day…they cut out, decorated, labelled and pieced pieces of each of the 3 types of pyramids together on the wall. We also used sugar cubes to build a step pyramid and coffee stir sticks and play dough to build a tree pyramid. It was neat watching them figuring out and trying different ways to build the pyramid set out in front of them. They had a lot of fun building a pyramid, using our balls and sticks set, so they could pretend to protect the pyramid treasures from robbers.
Next up were mummies. We learned what mummies are and about their beautifully painted sarcophagi, and that when mummies are wrapped in bandages they are wrapped with amulets to give them good luck. Everyone wrapped each others’ arms in toilet paper and added pretend amulets beneath. And of course we had to dance to our mummy song after everyones arms were wrapped! We also made salt dough amulets that we later painted to take home. It was also super yummy to make mummy dogs for lunch!
We learned that most mummies were pharaohs, or even cats! The pharaoh of most interest was Tutankhamun. We made our own pharaoh headdresses, using coloured paper rectangles and added a cobra snake above the forehead, which means that you are royalty.
Using Hieroglyphs we wrote our names. This made a Cartouche (royal name). It is neat writing in pictures instead of letters, and writing vertically instead of horizontally was confusing.
We also worked on some Egyptian ABB, AAB and AB patterns.
Our letters this week were V and W. We ran into some letter W words, like wrap and write, where you do not hear the w in the front! What odd words! You may have noticed on the whiteboard photos that we are starting to learn the French words for colours as well.
Of course we had to bake and go sledding this week before the snow melted!
