There were many things to celebrate this week! We began our week with Mardi Gras; learning about the parade and all the amazing costumes and foods. We made masks with feathers and a large popsicle stick to hold them.
Next came Valentines Day. Everyone shared all their wonderful Valentines cards and gifts with each other, and we talked about what is truly important on Valentines Day: showing those you love just how much you care about them. We read Pete the Cat: Valentines Day is Cool by Kimberly and James Dean.
A few of the math activities we did were; matching number (1-12) and number representations to make a full heart, size heart patterns, and heart addition where they cut out their own heart and answered the addition question on one side and wrote the answer on the other side. Some of them used their fingers to count, some used drawings and others knew by just thinking about it.
Some of the science and art activities we did this week were; painting with pom poms, paint and glitter, tissue paper hearts, baking soda/coloured vinegar in heart shaped cookie cutters, made cute love bugs, and made a valentine for moms and dads.
We also worked on letter and letter sound identification by putting the pieces of hearts together by picking a picture, figuring out what letter it started with, then finding the uppercase and letter case versions of that letter.
Next came Chinese New Year. We learned about the legend of Chinese New Year, Nian, and how he was scared off by the colour red, loud noises and fire. We discovered that it was the year of the dog and also which zodiac sign we all were. We also learned about the race that the 12 animals were in. There was a lot of pretend play with their zodiac signs and racing that day. To celebrate Chinese New Year we made paper lanterns.
And last of all we cannot forget that we celebrated a very special 4th birthday this week!
Our letters this week were H and T. And Elliot the elephant went home with the first child this week! He is some excited to be spending a week with everyone; doing what they are doing, going where they are going. He will have so much to tell us when he returns each week!
