We learned so much about space this week! We brainstormed all the things we knew were in space, i.e.: stars, rockets, astronauts, the space station, satellites, the sun, planets, the moon. We played a Space number matching game, then put the numbers into the proper number sequence, and put two single digit numbers together to make a double digit number. We practiced counting backwards from 10 to 0. We also made foam shape rockets, sponge painted Earths, Moon Goop and yarn wrapped popsicle stick stars.
Our space theme sure offered a lot of moments for some very interesting questions. For one of our science experiments we made balloon rockets. We had a great discussion about gravity and how it keeps us from floating away, and that is why rockets need a lot of power to push them up past Earth’s gravity. Which led to a great question about how some balloons float up into the sky and gravity doesn’t pull them down. So we talked about the weight difference between air and helium. I sure wish I had a Helium filled balloon to show them this funny voices that can result from talking in Helium!
We learned about the difference between an asteroid and a comet. Simply put, asteroids are made from rock and metal, and comets are made from ice and metal. We used crumpled tin foil to act as an asteroid and used glitter glue to show the lines from which direction it came. After our discussion about this difference, there were then points made about how the dinosaurs are extinct because of the ice like comets have. This led us to talk about how it is also thought to be that there was also a time dinosaurs were extinct from a meteor crashing into the Earth.
We got to talking about the difference between the sky and space. We talked about how the sky is still within the planet Earth and that space is above the sky. It was quite the interesting conversation, as we seem to see both the stars and airplanes in the sky.
Our letters this week were F and E. The kids built these letters with their bodies and our letter construction kit. They have been doing awesome at writing lowercase e in the proper direction. Yay! As we were thinking of words that begin with letter F someone thought of “fat” which led us to talk about “at” words again and while thinking of words for the letter E someone heard the words “pen” and “hen” in one of our letter songs so we talked about words that end in “en”. Once they hear a couple of words from a word family they are pretty good at finding more to go with them. They are really good at finding words that rhyme!
Our main theme and movement songs this week included “Zoom Zoom Zoom We’re Going to the Moon” by the Kiboomers and “Iggle Wiggle” by The Learning Station.
