It was all about the creepy crawlies this week!

The kids brainstormed all of the bugs they knew and as we learned and saw more insects we added them to the list. After studying what different types of bugs look like, we each drew our own new bug using a characteristics from various bugs. Someone brought in a dead bug and the kids are trying to locate the 3 main parts of its body; the head, thorax and abdomen.

Mmm…we make a dessert ant hill. We used chocolate pudding, graham crackers and chocolate chips. We made a baking soda/dirt/vinegar erupting ant hill. We also had a lot of fun singing a Barney’s version of The Ants Go Marching…it included learning how to do burpees! The kids thought this exercise had quite the funny name, and they were really go at it too!

Of course we cannot go a week without adventuring somewhere in this warm weather. This time it was to the Green Park where we climbed trees, picked dandelions and had a picnic.

We learned more about 3D shapes this week. The kids went on a hunt to find sphere, cylinder, cube and cone shapes.

Something neat to note: When we read rhyming books, the kids can figure out what the next rhyming word is going to be.

Plants and seeds

What do plants need to grow? Sun, Water, and Soil. We planted tiny flower seeds of our own and talked about where new flowers come from. We learned that the plant makes the seeds so new plants can grow elsewhere. But how do the seeds move they wondered? The ideas they came up with were the plant dropping them or the wind blowing them.

We also worked as a team to plant annuals. What great little helpers; putting the flowers in, adding more soil and watering them.

We painted with coloured ice cubes on popsicle sticks outside, with flowers being the subject. There were flower gardens, fancy flowers and flower delivery trucks created.

To practice our counting and number writing we drew flowers, counted the number of petals they had and wrote that numbers above the flower.

We continued this week with our number writing. They are doing so well writing their numbers in the correct direction and not getting discouraged when they have to try again. I love their perseverance and positive attitude! We also had a great discussion about homonyms (words that sound the same but have different meanings or spelling) because someone noticed that EIGHT sounds like ATE, and FOUR sounds like FOR.

We have had such nice weather lately that everyone thought it would be a good idea to play with the hose in the backyard. The joy that running around in the water brings! We also ventured down to the schools to play on the big play structures.

Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day!

Everyone has been crafting up a storm, working so hard on gifts for their moms! They have been sewing, writing, making cards, drawing pictures, and painting. I’m sure they cannot wait to show you!

Activities other than Mother's Day crafting included adventuring outdoors, journaling, playing number and visual discrimination type games, and building numbers with our number construction kit and writing numbers by making a hop scotch.

I hope all the moms out there have a wonderful Mother's Day full of love and laughter. :)

Cinco de Mayo

“It’s Cinco de Mayo today. Clap your hands and shout Ole!”

What fun, singing and dancing the Mexican Hat Dance! Judging by the volume, I think shouting Ole was their favourite part!

We learned where Cinco de May his celebrated. They are always so interested in looking at maps and comparing where we are to where ever we are researching. We also looked at the Mexican flag and talked about when Cinco de Mayo takes place. We counted to 5 in Spanish, to help us understand why the name of this day. To celebrate, we made maracas using plastic egg shells, a variety of beans and spoons to hold them. we experimented with the different sounds our maracas could make when using beans of different sizes and quantities. We also painted cacti using forks.

A celebration is not complete without food! We looked at tacos, burritos and fajitas. We made name tacos, the kids rolled each other up into blanket burritos, and we made fajitas for lunch one day. Watching some of them try to eat their over stuffed fajitas was pretty entertaining.

Our letter this week was Z. We learned a new musical instrument that starts with Z, the Zither. We also sang and danced to “What do the letters say?” to practice all of our letter sounds.

After listening to and singing Old MacDonald Had Some Vowels, the kids grouped into two teams to sort through uppercase and lowercase letters to find the vowels, and double checked each others vowels to see if they got them all.
Some other things we did this week include playing mud puddles, going on an adventure and having a picnic, baking, name writing and journals.
