Georgia’s often larger than life paintings even went off the edge of the canvas. The kids made tissue paper flowers inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe's large flower paintings. The kids are very used to making their entire drawing/painting fit onto the page/canvas, so it was quite interesting to watch them try and draw something that was too big for the page. After drawing their flower, they crumbled up tiny tissue squares and glued them onto their flower drawings. As a group, we also made a large colourful flower painting on canvas and worked in teams of two to build the proper sequence of letters to spell FLOWER, that was written on the board.
We read and listening to a few books about Georgia and in almost every book they mentioned a ladder she used to climb to get to the top of her house in New Mexico. What better way to see more of the world around you than to view it was from the top of a structure! The kids made their own versions of Georgia O'Keeffe's "Ladder to the Moon" by painting their sky, referencing any time of day, and gluing rectangle papers to make the ladder. Some of their work turned into a ladder to the sun instead!
The kids worked in their journals a lot this week. They drew something in their journals that is their favourite colour and traced shapes overlapping each other. The kids also worked on colouring the shapes specific colours that were called out. They are pretty good at remembering their shapes! And they have already known their colours for quite some time now. This was a good activity for not only shape and colour recognition but also following directions.
Some other things we did this week were playing lots of board games and puzzles, practicing adding numbers together using playing cards and manipulatives, and playing in Nose Hill Park. We came across many bees and had some good discussion about why there are so many right now and what they are doing.
