In addition to learning about groundhogs, we learned about Groundhog Day and Shadows. We are pretty excited to see if Balzac Billy sees his shadow or not! We are hoping for an early Spring!
The kids made paper groundhog faces, did a ‘colour, cut and build’ groundhog craft, explored shadows by dancing in the light of lamps and drew the shadows of objects in front of light, and used tiny cubes to cover shadows on cards.
Now that we have begun our second round of the alphabet, since the Fall, many of us have moved from search and find identification activities to tracing and replicating letters. Most of the children are pros at how to use a tri-pod pencil grasp as well! As we continue with the learning of letter sounds, some of the kid shave shown an increased interest in words and the spelling of them as well! Our letters this week were E and H. We practiced, through scavenger hunts and using our whole body, identifying vertical and horizontal lines. We had a lot of fun with the letter H, especially when pretending to be ‘Happy Horses, Hopping, Wearing Hats’!
We were so lucky to be able to go out and about a couple of days this week! What a chilly week! When the wind chill was little enough to leave the backyard, we were out in the freshly fallen snow, to make snow angels, footprints, pathways to play follow the leader, and to try to catch snow while jiggling low hanging tree branches. So fun!
Some other activities we did this week include, playdough, finding shapes within the house to match the ones on the image cards, and journaling about groundhogs and coloured their name.
We read this wonderful book one day called “I Am Human: A Book of Empathy” by Susan Verde and Illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds. It is part of a children’s wellness series collaboration between Susan Verde and Peter H. Reynolds. Peter H. Reynolds is also a great author/illustrator in the realm of children’s wellness, on his own. “I Am Human” shows us how great and challenging it is to be human, while emphasizing the power of good choices. I am looking forward to purchasing the remainder of the series in the future!
