Balzac Billy did not see his shadow…that means we will hopefully see Spring a bit earlier this year! Its as Groundhog Day on Friday so we watched Balzac Billy come out from his hole in the ground. With such a coldly as Friday, the kids were not convinced that Balzac Billy’s prediction was right. But to celebrate Groundhog Day anyway, we played around with making hand shadows in front of a light and sang the Itsy Bitsy Spider along with the hand actions. We also made profile shadow tracings of everyone. It’s so neat that you can tell which shadow belongs to which kid.
Some of the little ones have been eager to learn about tigers. So that was our mission this week. We learned about the many types of tigers, where they live, why they have stripes, what they eat, that they love to swim and much more! We practiced our colour pattern making with our T Pattern Tiger craft, made construction paper tigers and made some abstract tiger/stripes artwork by using black paint and shaving cream marbling, as well as using our very own homemade finger paints.
We read Leo the Late Bloomer by Robert Kraus. We talked about how not everyone is good at the same thing. But everyone is good at something, and that something is to be celebrated.
We also had a lot of fun dancing and singing to Walking in the Jungle by Simple Songs and Can you Dance like a Tiger? by Little Angel.
We have made our way through the alphabet once this, along with numbers 1-10 and shapes. Now we are on round two of our letter learning. It is great to see how much easier it is to remember what letters make what sounds. Everyone was able to come up with at least one or two “L” words on their own, before the help of a song. She exciting! Since we were talking about words that began with “L” we also talked about some words that ended with “L”, which brought us to the word family “all”. It was great to hear that they almost immediately figured out that “all” family words rhyme, and that many of them were able to put the letter sounds together to figure out which of the “all” words was written on the wall. As a teacher, this is one of the things that makes me so excited!
We also worked on journals and name writing this week.
