Camping/ Kindergarten

We welcomed a couple of new children this week, that we will see more of in the summer! It is always nice to meet new faces.! :)

We went to a Kindergarten performance and tour! Of course we had fun playing on the playground while we waited to go in! We had the chance to watch a cute Kindergarten performance, be a part of the classroom, watch the classroom butterfly be released and learn a little bit about some of the things they do in Kindergarten. They did so great asking questions, using good listening ears and just being generally curious about this new environment they had the chance to be a part of for a short while. If it was up to them we would have stayed their until bedtime!

We had a lot of fun pretending to go camping this week. We brainstormed all the things we knew or thought we may need to go camping, as well as some things that make camping extra fun. We built a pretend tent with a sleeping bag inside and made a pretend fire to roast marshmallows on. Because we couldn’t roast marshmallows over a real fire, we made s’mores in the oven. Mmmmm. We also painted using a a marshmallow on a twig as our paintbrush.

Some other things we did this week included painting pinecones, building with Lego, running in the sprinkler, and making pictures for the Mail Lady to show her how much we appreciate her.

Father's Day

Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads and Grand Dads! I hope your little ones spoil you today!

The kids have been working hard on their Father’s Day gifts to you! They made a tape resist painting that spells DAD, made a button representation of Dad, and worked hard on a Papa Bear card.

We went on an adventure through NoseHIll Park. They went as far as they ever have before, and have asked to go all the way to the other side next time we go….we may need to pack lunch for that!

We reviewed 2D shapes and counted how many sides each shape has and wrote that number inside it. We also did number number matching (number, number word and counting dots).

Some other activities we did this week include, baking, journals, Elliot’s journal, making a HopScotch/maze out of sidewalk chalk, putting on puppet shows.

Owls

This week was all about owls. We researched many different types of owls. We learned some of the sounds they make, hearing anything from typical hoo hoo sounds to a dog’s woofing. We learned that one type of owl can have varying sounds that mean different things, ie: the Great Horned Owl makes a woof sort of sound to ward off predators that are near. We also learned that owls are nocturnal and usually hunt at night. Although we did discover that Snowy Owls often hunt in the morning while other owls are sleeping! There were plenty of pretend play scenarios that ended up including owl pellets after learned about what owls eat and how they catch it. We had a variety of pretend play animals dropping pellets after they “ate”. These kids are too funny!

We made a few owl crafts including toilet paper tube owls, patterned paper owls, and Snowy Owls painted using cotton balls in a dabbing sort of motion to give some texture.

And we cannot forget all the outdoor fun we had this week; taking an adventure to a new park, having a picnic, playing in the sprinkler, and playing with frisbees and hole hoops.

Seasons

Now that the warmer months are upon us, we have been out and about quite a bit! It has been so great to be able to venture out to a variety of parks, visit the ravine and NoseHill Park, and climb some trees. What a great time to be a kid! Through these outdoor adventures we have been able to learn about bird eggs, decomposition, how trees and flowers eat and drink, staying safe as a group when coming to and crossing the street, how the City of Calgary rebuilds street curbs, how to measure our weight against the strength of tree branches, and how to offer helping suggestions to friends in need of assistance meanwhile being patient with them so they can have a chance to succeed at things that are difficult for them. These are just a few things that being outdoors has provided us this week alone. :)

This week we learned about and compared the characteristics of each season. As a group we brainstormed different items we use in each of the 4 seasons and made a person who didn't know which season to dress for…our person sure looked funny! We also practiced building Mat Man and then drew a person who was supposed to be in a specific season. Our big project what using a drawing of a tree split into 4 quadrants to illustrate the seasons. We used oil pastels, markers, crayons and paint.

We continued to compare 2D and 3D shapes this week. We identified 2D shapes that most closely resemble each 3D shape we have been learning about. We also played our shape/colour dominoes game.

Some other activities we did this week included throwing a frisbee, building with velcro sticks, playing Brown Bear, Black Bear what do you see? game, and playing What Time Is It Mr. Wolf with the hose.
