Of course, we had to do our exploding snowmen science experiment, since we were learning about winter. We learned a couple new things doing this experiment this time compared to last time; when the paper towel that holds the baking soda covers the popped hole the snowman baggie stays inflated, and that sometimes experiments don’t go as planned and we have to try again in a new way. This experiment is always a fun one to watch the anticipation as the gas produced from the baking soda and vinegar fills the baggie, stretching it farther and farther until it pops!
The kids drew a snowman in their journals, with all the details they wanted their snowman to have, like hats, varying facial features and limbs, feet and hair. They also matched snowman colour and colour word parts, sponge painted with snowflakes and snowmen stencils, sorted foam snowflakes, folded paper squares and cut them to make paper snowflakes, and drew snowflakes using white glue then added glitter to make them extra special!
We worked on the last diagonal lined letter of the alphabet this week, sang varying alphabet songs as a little bit of letter review and played some letter matching games. The big kids worked on the “all” word family by writing ALL on the chalkboards in both lowercase and capital letters, playing with rhyming together, and challenging each other to guess what they had written on their boards (they wrote two words, in word and/or picture form, with one of them being an “all” word. They incorporated other words they knew into this challenge as well!).
Reviewed the four 3D shapes we have been learning about (cylinder, sphere, cone and cube) by hunting for them (always a favourite game) and putting on of each shape onto each of the scattered snowflakes.
