It’s Halloween! It is definitely one of the favourite holidays for the kids. There were some really cute costumes this year! For our Halloween celebration we baked and decorated cupcakes, crawled and climbed through a human spider web (great gross motor activity), dug through a Halloween cauldron to find objects that started with the letter being called out, and had a dance party.
We learned about the parts of a pumpkin, where they come from and how they grow. Then we got right into the messy part! Pumpkin Scooping! There were definitely some kids who were right in there having a blast and a couple who did not want to touch at all! The next day was pumpkin carving time! The kids voted on the types of Jack-O-Lantern faces they wanted to be carved into the 3 pumpkins we had. They next figured out what types of shapes would best represent the emotions of the chose (mad, happy, surprised).
We also practiced number identification, counting and representing with our spider web play dough mats, and used our Jack-O-Lantern lids from Halloween to do some colour mixing and painting.
We talked about ways we could be safe while our Trick-or-Treating. The ideas we discussed were; staying together, having a flashlight or glow stick so people and cars could see you, don’t go to houses with no lights on, never go inside a strangers house and have your parents look at your candy before you eat any of it.
Along with learning about Halloween safety this week, we learned a bit about road safety. The kids had a lot of fun building a little city and then pretending to be pedestrians and cars. Some also chose to be the police who gave people tickets for not stopping at a STOP sign or driving too fast. Too funny! We also played Red Light Green Light, and the kids used their very own drivers licence for their pretend play. With this, we talked about how old you have to be to drive by yourself, how you have to always follow the rules of the road, and what a licence is/looks like. While talking about this I learned of some parents that had gotten tickets recently. Oh, the things kids tell anyone!
The kids are getting really good at crossing the street in a group. The leader knows when to stop on the sidewalk, and to stop farther back when there’s snow because you might be closer to the road than you think. The leader also knows to point their arm in the direction we, as a group want to cross so the cars know where we want to go.
Our movement songs Knock Knock Trick or Treat and Five Little Monsters by Super Simple Songs. And some of the nursery rhymes we had this week were Jack Be Nimble, Farmer in the Dell, One Two Buckle My Shoe, and Hey Diddle Diddle.
Our letters this week were B and R. We found out that there are some words that sound like they begin with R but they actually start with W. How odd!
