How can we stay healthy? We brainstormed all the ways we could think of to stay healthy. Some great ideas were: going to the doctor, exercising, eating healthy food, brushing your teeth, having a bath, washing your hands, and drinking lots of water.
So we asked ourselves…why is washing your hands with soap so important? Well we knew that some germs could make us sick, and that germs are so tiny they look invisible. So we did an experiment where we added a layer of pepper to the top of a plate full of water. When the kids touched the pepper (germs) on top of the water it hardly moved. This represented "washing" hands with no soap. When they dabbed a bit of dish soap on their finger before touching the pepper on top of the water, then touched the pepper, it spread from their quite quickly. This represented washing hands using soap. After this experiment it was a fun adventure to make our own mini soaps to take home!
We spent a good portion of our week learning about mouth germs and learning how to take care of our teeth. We learned, as shown through our egg in cola experiment, that when we don’t brush our teeth food, germs and bacteria can turn into plaque that sticks to our teeth, and can also cause cavities. We practiced flossing our own teeth and getting the "food" (play dough) out of our "teeth" (blocks) using wishing line (floss). Everyone also shared their teeth brushing/flossing routines and what types of toothbrushes they had.
We played a game where we rolled the dice, counted the dots and added a bit of toothpaste (play dough) to the correct numbered tooth. After using dotted dice, they worked in pairs to roll a die that had number words. They used different methods to figure out what the number word was i.e.; sounding out some of the letters in the word or looking to the number word wall to find the matching number word they had.
Have you ever panting with a toothbrush? We gave it a try, using varying techniques. I saw flicking paint from the toothbrush, dabbing, swiping from side to side, and violently brushing in circles!
The letters we focused on the week were M and N. Holy moly, those funny N sounding words that begin with K!
Some other things the kids did this week included making little germ creatures, matching uppercase and lowercase letters together to make a full tooth shape and had many days of crazy carpeting.
