Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
What an exciting week it has been! I love seeing how excited they get for little things like finding gold the Leprechaun left at the rainbow. The kids had a great time making a torn paper rainbow, knowing it was for the Leprechaun to come. They even made him mini stairs made out of blocks so he could get up and down the human sized steps.
St. Patrick’s Day landed on a Saturday so the kids wrote a note for the Leprechaun, asking him to come early instead of on Saturday. After they found the coins at the rainbow they worked together to count how many there were and then we split up the coins evenly so everyone who was not here on Friday would also have some. They also reused the chocolate gold coin foil wrappers for their pot of gold paintings
We talked about the colours of the rainbow, how many colours there are and how rainbows are made int he sky. We had a lot of fun blowing rainbow coloured bubbles with a straw, water and dish soap and touching a piece of paper to it for reveal a bubble painting. The kids also made puffy paint in the colours of the rainbow. It’s always exciting to watch the paint puff up in the microwave.
Did you know that 4 leaf clovers are good luck?! Unfortunately our shamrocks were only made with 3 leaves, but that was okay. We used tiny shamrocks to sort and make colour and size patterns with. The pattern making is getting really adventurous. I even saw a big, small, medium, big pattern! We also decorated our own paper shamrocks with glitter.
We also practiced our counting and number recognition by matching the two sides of the rainbow; the number and the number representation, then adding the corresponding number of coins. As well as counting the number of St. Patrick’s Day symbols and clipping a clothespin on the correct number.
We read a book called “There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover” by Lucille Colandro. We love “There Was an Old Lady…” books!
Our letters this week were S and J. A couple of the kids noticed that the “S” word “sat” was a part of the “at” family. Yay!
A few other things we did this week include journals, baking and making a bar graph with our favourite St. Patrick’s Day symbols. And of course we cannot forget our very special birthday girl! Happy birthday!
