Have you ever been to the ocean? That’s the question we asked our friends. We used a bar graph to find out if more people have or have not been to the ocean.
We read Mister Seahorse by Eric Carle and learned that many daddy ocean fish are the ones who takes care of the eggs and babies. We also learned that daddy seahorses have a pouch, much like a kangaroo, where they keep the eggs safe until they hatch. Very fascinating!
We used counting mats to identify a number and put the corresponding amount of water beads on the mat. The higher the number the more bubbles (water beads) the fish on the mat seemed to be blowing. We also practiced making patterns with the blue and green beads.
Fresh water vs Salt water…What is the difference? We used our senses to taste the difference, see the difference, smell the difference and feel the difference. The consensus was that salt water doesn’t taste very good and that the salt water definitely looked different than the fresh water. We played around with different materials to see if they would float or sink. When the egg went into each of the waters it sunk in the fresh water but bobbed, then floated in the salt water. That was clearly puzzling, but we learned that it is easier to float in salt water than fresh water. We also talked about where salt water can be found, which sparked the discussion about whether lakes had salt water or fresh water.
Tin foil is an interesting medium to paint on…We painted an ocean on tin foil and added small, medium and large foam fish to it. We also used varying shades of blue to create this artwork. How do we make blue lighter or darker?
Mr. Pointy came out of his bucket to say hello, when we re-visited the Bucket Filler concept. We talked about what it means to fill or dip out of someone's bucket. We each told Mr. Pointy one thing we did today that filled someone's bucket.
Some other things we did this week include; building letters with playdough and our letter construction pieces, practicing what sounds the letter L and M make and what words begin with those sounds, as well as a Flower Hunt in Nosehill Park (there are so many different types of flowers growing in the wild there).
Can’t wait for more ocean fun next week!
