Happy New Year!
We started our week by talking about our Christmas holidays and what we were thankful for. I heard many stories about sledding and having family members visit. The gifts came in second when asked about the favourite parts of their holidays.
What are New Year resolutions? Why are they important? After talking about resolutions we read Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution by Pat Miller to further understand what a resolution could be. We concluded that a resolution can be something that you will do better or more of this year (ie: have better listening ears or making new friends) and acts of kindness towards others (ie: helping people more often or helping fiends to clean up their mess). Following this week long discussion, we made Kindness Cards for some of our family members at home that display acts of kindness that we will do for that person. Some examples of their Kindness Cards included helping to make supper, cleaning their rooms, listening more often and promising to never stop loving them.
10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1……Happy New Year!
It was a lot of fun to practice counting backwards at each day. We did a countdown through our New Year song, our countdown balls (of which we wrote our own numbers on) and our New Years Pom Pom Poppers. We also used foam clocks to count and tell time.
We made New Year hats, pipe cleaner firework rings, drip paintings and firework salt/watercolour paintings. We also did one of our favourite science activities (baking soda/vinegar) with a touch of glitter and blew through a straw into a dish soap, water and glitter mixture to make bubbles.
After reviewing the 2D shapes the kids knew, each of them chose two shapes to draw and then passed their drawn shapes to someone else to go hunting for. We also spent some time talking about the difference between flat and fat shapes.
And we cannot forget about the kitty craft we made for Pan and Tinker’s birthday!
