We have been noticing all that beautiful colours in the neighbourhood lately. We learned a bit about why leaves change colour in the Fall. They spent a decent amount of time hanging out in the brush and finding pretty Fall colours. The kids found a lovely variety of coloured leaves to use for their leaf bowls. That was a messy, fun time!
They also collected leaves for their leaf painting. They were given leaves, paint, paper and a cotton swab. Leaves were used as paint stamps and paint brushes. The cotton swabs were used to trace the shape of the leaf onto the paper and to paint the leaves with as a paintbrush. The paint was even used as glue to paste together leaves. It's amazing the creative thinking that can happen when not given a paintbrush!
The kids played Fall action games, where they had to act like a particular Fall item. Watching them roll across the house like a pumpkin or scurry like a squirrel was quite entertaining! They also practiced number identification, sequencing and using a ten frame, with Fall number puzzles and number line cards.
We explored a variety of gourds and larger pumpkins. What neat textures to feel and describe. The kids noticed patterns within the colours on the little gourds. We also compared gourds and practiced using describing words. A couple days later the kids used elastics and gourds/pumpkins to stretch their motor skills and teamwork.
The kids worked on following directions and trying a new oil pastel technique with their oil pastel pumpkin drawings.
We also started learning some 3D shapes. The kids went on searches to find these fat shapes.
Our letters this week were U and C. Magic C Bunny made an appearance too! He is always the star of the show when learning about the letter C. The kids can tell you how much he loves things that start with the letter C! Even when letter time was done, they continued to find things Magic C Bunny would like, as he sat up high on the shelf watching them. They couldn't figure out why he wasn't answering them, like he did at rest time with his bunny actions, when they asked him yes/no questions while up high on that shelf... they figured he was just tired and wanted to watch. cUte!
