This week was all about our Community Helpers and the jobs they do to help everyone in our neighbourhoods. We brainstormed the types of community helpers and even thought of community helper jobs that dogs do as well. We had a lot of fun making play dough mat faces and singing multiple “People in your Neighborhood” songs from Sesame Street. We played two games involving community helpers; one was charades, and the other was a game where you pick a card that everyone but you can see and they have to give you descriptive clues so you can guess what community helper you are. We matched the word of an image to that of the corresponding community helper (letter sound practice) and had to find images that show tools that each community helper needs to do their job.
There are so many types of Community Helpers to learn about, so we focused on one in particular this week; a mail carrier. We pretended we were mail carriers ourselves and delivered envelopes to pretend houses by reading numbers, number words and counting number representations if unsure what the number was. Some even realized they could use the number word wall to match their envelope number word to to find out what it said. After delivering the mail, everyone was assigned a pretend house where they had the chance to open mail. Inside the envelopes were letters, which they then had to put in the correct order of the alphabet.
We wanted to write a thank you note for the mail lady, who we say hello to just about everyday, and give it to her. So we started brainstorming ideas of what we could write in a note to her and came up with some sweet things to say. But then a couple of the kids had an idea that we should also make her something to show how much we appreciate her. The first thing that popped into their minds was to make her a blanket, and it turned into the kids learning about to sew by using a needle and thread to sew two pieces of felt together. I was quite impressed with their craftsmanship! All of the felt pieces they worked so hard on will be sewed together for us to give to the mail lady next week.
Most of us began writing in our brand new journals this week! It was great to see that all our letter sound practice has given many a greater confidence is trying to write more words than last year (especially for the older ones).
We spent some time this week learning more about 3D “fat” shapes. We listened to shapes songs and went on scavenger hunts to find examples of these 3D shapes.
