Bats Bats Bats!
They are nocturnal and use echolocation to find their way around. They also hang upside down so they can drop and begin to fly because they can lift up like birds can. Bats are quite interesting!
Too try and grasp the idea of echolocation we took turns being the bat (blindfolded) to listen for and try to find the person making quiet noises somewhere in the room. Bats sure can hear a lot better than we can!
There was also a lot of pretend play involving bats…the ways in which kids can figure out how to be upside down in comical!
We played a couple games this week involving bats and witch hats. We played a memory type game, with the goal being to find the bat under one of these coloured hats. Using the coloured witch hats from a previous game, the kids matched up the coloured hats they had to that of their friends. Not only was it good colour review and matching practice but also great practice in taking turns in giving and taking the matching pair.
We sure made a lot of bat crafts this week! We made a toilet paper tube bat (painting it and adding wings we cut out to it), a handprint bat (using our painted handprints for the wings and paper shapes for the body/ears), sponging chalk dust through a stencil to create an image of bats flying in front of a moon and sponge painting through a stencil to create a negative image of bats flying in front of a moon. We also made a foam clip bat. It was great for practicing cutting on a curve and using little fingers to clip the bats onto the piece of hanging yarn.
We had quite a few adventures this week! The distance the kids climbed at NoseHill Park was nothing short of amazing. It is so great to be able to take the little ones out into nature. They even found a mini tipi to play in. Of course they also had to bring back some rocks for painting. Upon request (our third long adventure this week!) we walked down to the elementary school to play and have a picnic...even though it was a tad bit chilly.
Our letters this week were S and J. We practiced building our letters with our letter construction kit this week. Our word brainstorm was very successful this wee. I think it’s is the most words I have ever seen them come up with for one letter (S). We even ran out of space on our whiteboard! We learned that when S is beside H it makes a shhhhh sound instead of just sss.
Some nursery rhymes this week included: Little Miss Muffet, Rain Rain Go Away, Ten In The Bed. Acting out Ten In The Bed was funny. Our version was Six On The Floor.
Our movement song this week was Bat Finger Family by Super Simple Songs.
